Climate statistics in the calendar
The climate of Australia’s capital cities and major centres is represented using statistics calculated relative to 'recent decades', usually determined by data availability at the current site. Where possible, the current primary city site has been used, but in some cases alternative, nearby sites or the former primary city site have been used due to insufficient data at the current primary city site. For example, some airport sites have been used for wind or sunshine data.
Where available, statistics given are for the period 1991–2020*. Although the historical climate record goes back considerably further, a 30-year period is the World Meteorological Organization standard for calculating climate averages. The use of statistics relative to recent decades gives a fair indication of the average weather during the contemporary period, and accounts for the way the climate of many regions has changed over the past 100 years. For example, there have been widespread increases in temperatures and shifts in regional rainfall patterns, such as the general decline in rainfall over south-west Western Australia. Because extreme conditions, such as highest wind gust measurements, are rare, these are calculated across the entire record of observations at a site.
Two statistics—mean and median—are used to represent the ‘typical’ rainfall. The mean, or average, can sometimes give a misleading impression of rainfall, as a few extreme high rainfall totals can significantly increase the monthly mean. For example, during the drier parts of the year, a location which normally experiences very low rainfall may receive uncharacteristically high rainfall. This would significantly increase the mean rainfall and therefore misrepresent the overall climate. In these instances, the median rainfall, which is not affected to the same extent by rare events, may provide a better indication.
In the monthly ‘Average weather conditions’ tables, the threshold temperature of 35 °C was chosen as it approximates 100° Fahrenheit, used historically. The 2 °C value is used because it is effectively zero degrees at ground level and is a good indicator for the likely presence of frost.
A rain day is one where at least 0.2 mm of precipitation was measured (or 0.1 mm where observations are read in 0.1 mm increments, which is standard at some more recent sites). A rain day does not occur when there is only a trace of moisture in the rain gauge, or when the precipitation was observed to be solely from frost, dew, or fog.
* Where data are not available for this period, an alternative period may have been used. Maximum wind gust is always assessed over the full period of record. See table below for details.

Where two site numbers are listed with only one site name, the measuring equipment has been moved during the period of interest to a different location within the same area. For example, from one side of the airport runways to the other side.
A shorter or varied reference period has been used where there are limited data available and there are no other comparable sites which could be used in conjunction with the listed site.
Where two locations are listed, the period of record at each site does not cover the whole period of interest, and data from both sites have been used for the calculation of statistics as the sites have been assessed as being comparable.
Climate statistics for many other locations, including locations used previously, can be found via our website at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/index.shtml?bookmark=200
